About Project
ecopoint Overview
ecopoint, the heart of the Ecomotive eco-conscious gaming experience, brings forth an engaging dimension to the app
This innovative gamification segment encourages users to embark on delightful journeys aimed at reducing their carbon footprint through the utilization of ecomotive vehicles
ecopoint transforms the interface of the app into an enjoyable and interactive space, where users can seamlessly adopt eco-friendly transportation while having fun
Key Issues Faced
The nonexistence of transportation apps integrating gamification via the Octalysis framework
Sourced accurate carbon footprint data for our diverse vehicle range
Created a captivating user interface that seamlessly incorporated the Octalysis framework principles and resonated with ecomotive’s fundamental concepts
Solutions
-
Enforced the Octalysis framework principles, catapulting Ecomotive to the forefront of green transportation apps, distinguished by a solid foundation of gamification
-
Utilized reputable sources such as www.gov.uk and transportenvironment.org, complemented by articles from various reliable platforms, along with insights from ChatGPT, to successfully procure the carbon footprint data for our vehicle lineup
-
Employed innovative techniques, including fun 3D elements, illustration, and immersive storytelling, to foster deep user engagement and interaction within the app
ecopoint Octalysis Framework
Epic Meaning and Calling
The central concept of the Octalysis framework is referred to as Epic Meaning & Calling.
Within this framework, Epic Meaning and Calling is recognized as a fundamental motivation wherein a player believes their actions serve a purpose larger than themselves, often feeling as if they've been 'chosen' for a particular mission
-
To embody this concept, our team and I have designed an experience that offers users a guilt-free transportation solution through our vehicles
-
By providing users with a clear assessment of their saved and reduced carbon footprint, we empower them to grasp the significance of their contributions to the planet and environment
-
This approach encourages users to actively reduce their carbon footprint, utilizing their saved carbon as an educational tool to witness their impact and transforming users into Heroes, both for themselves and the environment
Development & Accomplishment
-
Our brains have a natural desire to feel progress, to experience growth, and to see numbers go up
-
ecopoint effectively involves users in a gamified experience utilizing tools like Points, Badges, Leaderboards, Saved CO2 and Progress bar all seamlessly integrated within a journey dedicated to reducing CO2 emissions
-
These mechanisms cater to users' desire for progress and accomplishment. These elements are strategically positioned to consistently enhance users' sense of achievement. For instance:
Points are earned from eco-friendly choices and overcoming challenges
Badges commemorate significant milestones and are divided into two segments: 'In Progress' and 'Completed'
Leaderboards provide a comprehensive view that avoids unnecessary comparisons among users, preserving a positive and eco-conscious environment
In every section of ecopoint, a progress bar is available. This bar illustrates your current level and the distance remaining to level up, achieve Badges, secure a top position on Leaderboards, and advance to the next phase of your journey
Furthermore, the app vividly presents encountered challenges, amplifying the sense of accomplishment and advancement in the context of eco-conscious endeavours
Empowerment of Creativity & Feedback
Numerous strategies exist to make an endgame exciting, and successful games last a long time partly because they use Empowerment of Creativity and feedback
ecopoint does this uniquely. By combining educational content and a captivating interface, ecopoint keeps users engaged. Users can complete challenges in the journey to earn points. These include real activities like using eco-friendly bikes, E-bikes, scooters, and quizzes to boost users’ green thinking
ecopoint also urges users to invite friends, creating a sense of community. Users gain points and become sustainability advocates, growing the ecomotive community
Finishing challenges, inviting friends, and engaging with education lets users increase badge collections
Milestones mean levelling up, unlocking new journeys with fresh challenges, education, and interactive 3D elements. This blend of creativity, feedback, and eco-focus creates an engaging and evolving experience
Ownership & Possession
The Ownership and Possession Pillar is based on the principle that because you own something, you want to improve it, protect it, and get more of it. This pillar is often associated with elements such as virtual goods and currencies
In the context of ownership and possession, ecopoint incorporates two types of points: status points and exchangeable points
Status points quantify the cumulative points earned throughout the ecopoint journey
Marginal Status Points are allocated for specific challenges or time periods, calculated once those challenges or periods conclude
As for Exchangeable Points, some can be exchanged within the game system for valuables, but all points contribute towards levelling up, promoting progression
In the world of game design and the Ownership & Possession core drive, an intriguing occurrence arises: the act of modifying avatars during play or upon finishing specific stages stands out as a delightful and tactically significant challenge in competitive gaming
This aspect has been seamlessly incorporated into our system by introducing this functionality
Social Influence & Relatedness
ecomotive, though not a social media platform, harnesses the positive aspects of social influence
The app prompts users to invite friends, view friends' Level and Saved CO2 achievements shared on social media, and track their own progress on leaderboards, fostering healthy comparison
This mechanism effectively encourages users to share Saved CO2, advance on their journey, and engage more with ecomotive in alignment with their friends.
This demonstrates how Social Influence and Relatedness, a fundamental human desire for connection and comparison, becomes a motivating force when applied skillfully, as highlighted by Yu-kai Chou
Scarcity & Impatience
Users are often drawn to what they can't easily obtain. While receiving a badge to join the ecomotive app might not excite users, they're likely to frequently consider badges that are challenging to earn
They might contemplate the time needed to reach Hero status or the remaining devices required to collect all vehicle badges, adding those earned points to their total points
Alternatively, they might wonder if they can finish all the challenges in each level, earning individual points that contribute to their overall total and increase their exchangeable points
Unpredictability & Curiosity
This idea focuses on using unpredictability and curiosity to captivate interest. By introducing unexpected elements, it exploits our natural curiosity to boost engagement and motivation in different situations
ecopoint employs this idea to motivate users to progress to the next level. When content is locked, there's an inherent curiosity to uncover what's hidden
For instance, in the middle image, higher levels are inaccessible until users earn sufficient points
Moving to the next frame, users can tackle level-specific challenges to earn individual points. These varied challenges pique user curiosity
Loss & Avoidance
The Loss and Avoidance idea is about motivating by making you worry about losing something or facing unwanted events. It's connected to Ownership and Possession, where something you earned might be taken away.
These situations arise in challenges that users might struggle to complete at each level. If they can't complete these challenges, they risk losing points. Progressing to the next level in My journey and the fear of losing points in challenges remind users of potential losses.
Additionally, in the Saved CO2 section, when calculating the environmental impact of using gasoline vehicles instead of ecomotive vehicles, users receive a warning about the harm it can do to the environment
